Lille frö babyset
Lille frö is Norwegian for “little seed”, or “little grain”.
We often call the smallest babies “lille frö”, which I think is so cute.
I used it a lot for my daughter when she was a tiny baby-girl.
And, I used to dress her in a cardigan looking very much like the one in this set. I loved that it was buttoned on the side!
Although this design is really simple I love the distinct details of the textured moss-st (seed-st), the buttons on the sides, the garter edges.
And, the cutest little hat to go with it!
Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a fingering weight yarn with a great stitch-definition and in a quality suitable for a baby. And, if it’s superwash, it’s even better! I used CaMaRose “Yaku 4/16” to work the set. This 100% fingering weight, merino wool, comes in balls of 50 gr/1.76oz, and 200 m/219 yards. Needles: a small, circular needle, 3 mm/US2.5 for body of the cardigan and the bonnet. A set of dpns, 3 mm/US2.5 for the sleeves of the cardigan, and the crown of the bonnet. Notions: stitch-markers, buttons 0.8 cm/0.3” across. Tapestry needle. Separate holders.
Gauge
26 sts and 46 - 50 rows in moss-st (seed-st) = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”.
The cardigan
Sizes: new-born / 3mo / 6mo / 9 – 12mo Finished chest, when buttoned: 40/43/47/53 cm = 15.75/17/18.5/21”.
Yardage: you will need approximately 210/240/300/350 m (230/261/330/385 yards)
Buttons: 6/7/8/9 buttons, 0.8 cm/0.3” across
The bonnet
Sizes: new-born – 3 months / 6 months / 9 – 12 months Circumference at the widest point of the bonnet, before shaping the crown: 33/37/40 cm = 13/14,.5/15.75”. The sample is worked in size new-born – 3months. Yarn: approximately 60/80/100 m = 65/87/109 yards of fingering weight yarn to work the bonnet.
Notions: 2 buttons and scrap-yarn for the embroidery.
The pattern
There are full instructions for the cardigan, as well as for the bonnet. All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches. All necessary stitch-counts are given.
There is a schematic for the cardigan, plus a schematic for the disposal of the sts over the lower body.
There is an additional picture showing the work of the cardigan after joining the sleeves to the body.
The moss-st pattern is written out.
Knitting skills: cast-on, bind-off, knit and purl sts.
The constructions are completely seamless, and there is no picking up of sts. I assume that an adventurous beginner would be able to work the set.
