Predictably in May, the Lilies-of-the-Valley bloom in my flower garden. It is the designated flower for those born in the month of may, of which I am one. So, for May, I have worked up a sock pattern featuring lacework that resembles the Lily-of-the-Valley.

Lily has a full gusset with faux flap style heel. The instep and front of leg are worked in a traveling stitch, cable, and lace pattern. Nupps are added representing the tiny, bell-shaped flowers of this spring bloomer. The heel flap and back of leg are worked in a complementary lacework pattern. Options for working a rounded or anatomical toe, plain or reinforced heel, and Fancy Pants or Plain heel flap are included. Foot length can be adjusted. Stitch patterns are charted. Finished sock size medium fits foot with a circumference at ball of foot of 8.75 inches (22 cm). The sample sock pictured has a leg length from bottom of heel to top of cuff of ~7.5 inches (19 cm), finished foot length of ~9.25 inches (23.5 cm) from back of heel to toe tip. Cuff measures ~1.5 inches (3.8 cm) tall..

Total stitches 58 (66, 74).

Pattern in gauge as written has ~ 20% negative ease, but has generous stretch.

Gauge

~ 9 stitches, 12 rows per inch (35 stitches, 47 rows per 10 cm) in the round in stockinette

Recommended Yarn

~ Fingering weight (~14-16 WPI) sock yarn total amount of ~ 400-460 yds/100 g (366-421 m/100 g), depending on sock size and leg length. Sample made with Barking Dog Yarns, Achilles; 400m/ 100g, 80/20 SW nylon, color Last Frost. A solid or subtle tonal yarn will show pattern best.

Recommended Needle Size

US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles or size to obtain gauge. Optional 2.5 mm needle for working leg and/or bind-off.

Pattern can be worked using Magic Loop, 2 circulars, or Double-points. Adjust directions to your needle choice.

Other tools: Three or more closed stitch markers and darning needle. Optional crochet hook for nupps, picot bind-off, and cable needle for crosses. If using beads instead of nupps for flowers, you will need tools for beading and 6 beads per pattern repeat. Number of pattern repeats will depend on size.
