This pattern has been test knitted.
Saredo Fairey Floss, the yarn that inspired the creation of this pattern, is a 100% recycled cotton yarn from Japan, spun with fallen fibre from cotton spinning mills into a chainette yarn. A chainette yarn is a tiny knitted tube similar in appearance to an i-cord. In Japan, a chainette yarn is called lily yarn (リリヤーン). Interestingly, a type of knitting using a spool, known as リリアン (pronounced as lee-lee-ah-n), popular in the 1970s in Japan, produces similar looking chainette tubes. As an art teacher, I own a few plastic versions of the tools and let my students create crafts using them as they wish.
Connecting lily yarn and リリアン with rather similar pronunciations, I named this pattern Lily Anne. You can choose to knit Lily (the smaller bag) or Anne (the larger bag).
The gauge and size of the bags are for reference. You can knit the bags in any size and any gauge. Have fun holding yarns together to create unique yarn combinations while making up the thickness needed to knit the bags quickly with those few stitches that you cast on in the pattern. A tight gauge makes a sturdy fabric which is great for a bag, but a gauge that is too tight can be hard on your fingers. Find your preference by experimenting with the type and thickness of yarns, number of strands and needle size. The samples are knitted on a rather tight gauge to make bags with sturdy but not stiff structures.
NOTES AND TECHNIQUES
Begin the bag by working the base in garter stitch, then picking up stitches around the base for the sides. Work the sides in the round, then divide stitches to work the strap and flaps. The strap is worked from one side of the bag to the other before seaming with Kitchener stitch. The flaps are worked flat.
