In the Christmas episode of Season 9 of Bob’s Burgers, Linda finds yarn she bought years ago that she was going to use to make scarves for Tina, Gene, and Louise. With a renewed interest in learning how to knit, she decides to make these scarves for Christmas. However, knitting is more difficult than she thought, and she recruits Bob to help knit so they can finish in time for Christmas. Bob ends up doing a better job of knitting, causing Linda to doubt her skill. In the end, her scarf looks a bit bedraggled, especially compared to Bob’s work. When the children open the scarves on Christmas day, they all want the purple scarf that Linda made because it looks like it has a story behind it. This scarf is not as perfect as the other ones that look store bought, and are, therefore, boring.

This pattern utilizes knitting techniques intended to make the scarf look bedraggled, like Linda’s scarf, while still keeping its structural integrity so it won’t actually fall apart.

If you do not want to follow my directions exactly, I have provided an index of the stitches I used to make the scarf look bedraggled. You can sprinkle them in as you like for your own scarf with a story!

You can have a lot of flexibility with this pattern, especially if you decide to use the index. You can size this up or down, use a different yarn weight, or different needle size, depending on the preference.
