PATTERN NOTES
This hat was originally designed as a child’s hat for a “My First Hat” workshop I teach, using Berroco Vintage yarn. Then one day we unintentionally discovered that using Vintage Chunky instead magically resulted in an adult-size hat without changing any of the knitting instructions!
You can easily modify the look of either size of this hat by working a ribbed edge instead of the rolled edge, or swapping plain stockinette for the decorative border, or make it slouchier, even the i-cord top is totally optional. Make whatever changes you’d like or just knit it up as shown! Pattern includes all the tips you’ll need on how to change it up.
DIMENSIONS
Child’s Hat: 14½” circumference (unstretched) and 7” tall from CO edge; 6½“ tall (with brim rolled up).
Adult’s Hat: 20½” circumference (unstretched) and 9” tall from CO edge; 8½” (with brim rolled up).
YARN
Child’s Hat: Berroco Vintage: 52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon; 1 skein; 100 grams: 217 yds / 200m.
Adult’s Hat: Berroco Vintage Chunky; 1 skein; 100 grams: 136 yds / 124m.
GAUGE (in stockinette)
Child’s Hat: 20 sts & 27 rnds = 4”/10cm using Berroco Vintage.
Adult’s Hat: 14 sts & 21 rnds = 4”/10cm using Berroco Vintage Chunky.
NEEDLES
Child’s Hat: 4.5mm / US 7, 16” circular and set of DPN’s.
Adult’s Hat: 6mm / US 10, 16” circular and set of DPN’s.
(Adjust your needle size if necessary to get correct gauge)
If you’re making the ribbed edge option it’s recommended you also get circulars one needle size smaller (just for the ribbing) than what you’re using for gauge specified for the remainder of the hat.
SKILLS USED
Long-tail cast on, knit/purl in the round using a circular needle and DPN’s, decreasing stitches.
Thank you to my student and friend for sharing the photo of her lovely blue hat (with the brim rolled all the way down for yet another styling option!)
