The lindworm is a mythical creature in Northern, Western and Central European folklore that traditionally has the shape of a giant serpent monster living deep in the forest. It can be seen as a sort of dragon.

According to legend, everything that lies under the lindworm will increase as the lindworm grows, giving rise to tales of dragons that brood over treasures to become richer.

The Lindworm shawl is a combination of wedges that are connected by a meandering path (or worm) – hence the name. It can be knitted with two contrasting skeins, two color gradients, two solids, one solid combined with a color gradient, or ideally with a Dibadu Fadient set combined with a contrasting color.

Lindworm is originally designed for Dibadu Tiny Merino in the lovely colors of Murmeliewelten Auguluna combined with Lemoncino. It took only 440y/400m - 3.5oz/100g of Auguluna and 306y/280m - 2.5oz/70g of Lemoncino to create a shawl with 64“/162cm legth and 13.5“/34cm width.

Of course, you can use other yarns and even other yarn weights as well since gauge doesn’t matter. All you need is two contrasting skeins, two color gradients, two solids, one solid combined with a color gradient, all these combinations will do. I knitted a second version using Schoppel Zauberball Teezeremonie combined with Durch die Blume. I used 3.88oz/150g - 656y/600m of Teezeremonie and 35.3oz/110g - 482y/440m of Durch die Blume for a shawl 14”/36cm deep and 84”/212cm wide.

The size and the amount of yarn you need will depend on your choice of yarn. Since there is a waxing and a waning part, you don’t need to swatch. Simply knit the waxing part until you have used 50% of your yarn and then start the waning part. You will need more yarn for the wedges than for the worm. For the worm you will need 75% of what you needed for the Wedges.

Although Lindworm is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join the modules as you go. This pattern includes short rows. You will find photo tutorials on this technique as well as the joining methods. If you prefer other short row methods they can be used as well.
