The Linear Waves Shawl is knit from tip to tip, increasing until you reach the bottom point, then decreasing to the opposite tip. The size is customizable. I used right at 400 meters (437 yards) to knit the shawl pictured which has a 66 inch wingspan and is 22 inches from top edge to bottom tip.

The pattern includes both charted and written instructions and is easy enough to follow for an advanced beginner. There are five charts, but don’t let the number intimidate you! They are very easy to follow and the pattern is easily memorized in just a few repeats.

Stitches used include: knit, purl, k2tog, yo, slip stitch, ssk, sssk, and a two stitch wrap that is explicitly defined. I have also uploaded a video to my website demonstrating the stitch.

The stitch pattern creates what looks like vertical waves. This shows off self-striping yarn wonderfully, but would also look great in a variegated or solid yarn.

June 27th, 2011- Errata Update: I sent out an update to everyone who has downloaded the pattern, but if you didn’t get it or if you are working from the original pattern, please be aware of the following:

On Edging Chart B, Row 5, there should not be a knit stitch after the kfb at the end of the row. Simply end with the kfb stitch.

I hope this hasn’t caused any confusion!
