This is a pattern for a mosaic overlay crochet square with a lion on it. It’s crocheted in the round, so it starts in the middle.

You can use this as a coaster or make more squares and connect them to make, for example, a blanket.

As a coaster, this is 9.2 by 9.2 cm after blocking, made with cotton fingering yarn and a 2 mm hook.
With the paw-border added this is 13.8 by 13.8 cm.

The coaster I made is 12 grams total (30 with paw-border included), you need more of the background color than of the second color. Note that I used ankered double crochet stitches, which takes more yarn.

The pattern includes a written pattern, a chart and a short explanation of how to close rounds and how to make the corners.
Chart and written pattern for the bigger version with the paws is also included.
It does not include tutorials for the stitches, nor for the overlay mosaic crochet technique.

This pattern may be a bit difficult for beginners, although mosaic crochet itself is easy to understand.
