Lion Newbury is engaging to knit in smocked lace. In this pattern a textured rib transitions gradually into detailed chandelier-shaped lace. Or, you could instead see the lines of the gorgeous Australian native waratah flower in this pattern.

Lion Newbury is best worked in yarn with a yardage of about 200m (220 yards) per 100 grams. Recommended yarns include Cleckheaton 8-ply, the Cascade 220 series and Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8-ply.

The sizing can be adapted to make a shorter cowl or one that is longer and looser, or both.

The pattern has both charts and full written instructions.

Lion has a partner hat, Georgiana Newbury, which uses the same stitch pattern to create a snug hat.

This pattern is named for Lion Newbury, a Major in the Dragoon Guards in Georgette Heyer’s Sylvester.

This pattern has been tech edited by Madeleine444.
