Listening to wool through wool
In this project, knitters may listen to sounds from the very landscape where Shetland wool is grown through a speaker made of that same material. The KNITSONIK speaker pillow has been designed in conjunction with a special online sound map featuring freely downloadable mp3s recorded in Shetland by Felicity Ford.
The pattern details how to make a circular woollen pillow in Aran weight 100% Shetland wool, containing a speaker. Once knitted, this can be used with a smartphone, laptop, mp3 player, or any other device with audio playback and a 3.5mm headphone socket.
The pattern also includes a short history of the concept and project, and a list of many of the sounds which can be downloaded from the special Shetland wool soundmap to play through your knitted speaker.
Concept, location recordings and knitting pattern by Felicity Ford, sound map built using radio aporee ::: maps by Udo Noll.
Please note: knitters who wish to complete this project will need to buy a Soundlab pillow speaker, which retails in the UK for approximately £3.00.
