From the pattern introduction:

This sock design comes directly from a photograph of an undated pair of socks in the National Museum of Lithuania in Vilnius. The originals are made of black and natural gray wool. The inspiration for amber yarn for the main color in this design comes from the precious fossil resin, amber, found along the Baltic coastline. These socks have a Dutch Heel and a Wedge Toe.
