Welcome to my Little Vehicles Collection!

You have chosen the Little Backhoe Loader block

This is one of the blocks of the Little Vehicles collection and featured on the Little Vehicles Blanket (also found in my Ravelry store). It can be used as a feature on a garment, placemat, wall hanger or more of them can be crocheted together to make a scarf or a banner for a blanket. The variations are endless.

The idea for this pattern came about when my little boy asked for a black and yellow scarf, just like his big brother’s. It’s a simple striped scarf. I tried. I honestly did try. Failed. My hook just would not do simple. I started to draw and the first five of the Little Vehicles arrived and I turned them into a scarf. He was thrilled!!!

Since then I have extended the selection with more patterns and used 6 of them for a baby blanket combined with sections from the Havana Afghan pattern by Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldsdottir (also available on Ravelry).
This is when I realised that the combination of mosaic stitches can create brilliant car track-like patterns, which would be the perfect addition to the vehicle images and the Little Vehicles Blanket pattern was born.

Look out for more little vehicles to be added to the collection!

Technique
Overlay mosaic or Single-row mosaic
Using US terminology
There isn’t a tutorial included with this pattern, there are amazing tutorials available online, such as the “Beginners Guide to mosaic crochet” video.
The only two stitches you need to know are single crochet and double crochet stitches and of course you need to be able to make a foundation chain or a chainless foundation row.
Don’t be intimidated, you’ll be amazed how easy this technique is! I know I was!!!

Gauge/size/hook/yarn
Gauge only matters when you’re deciding on the size of your item.
You can use any type of yarn, make sure to use the most suitable size hook for your chosen yarn and tension.

With Aran/Worsted weight yarn and 5mm hook the sizes are:
Height: 14cm
Width: 29cm
Yardage (approximately)
Main Colour: 45m
Pattern Colour: 39m

The width is easily adjustable by adding extra stitches evenly to both ends.
