The pattern recommends Panache baby alpaca wool, which is sooooo soft and divine! Using 4ply yarn makes for a loose, drapey lacy fabric. However you can use other yarn if you like, as long as you match gauge. One of my testers even made gauge with a DK(8ply) yarn, which made for a thicker fabric, which would be great if you live in a cold climate.

This pattern uses front and back post double crochet. It includes instructions for a chin strap with 3 button holes. The pattern has been fully tested, and is very clear, but if you find anything tricky I offer full support via email.
