This year was the year of the gnomes.
A lovely gnome brought me cheer in a dispirited time and I made several, improvising ever smaller. I wanted a little gnome for my worsted weight yarn.
This is my contribution to the growing group of gnomes.
It takes about 20 minutes -- and they’re small enough to be tree ornaments, gift wrapping additions. They’re just the right size for cats, pockets and purses.

A gnome is a diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus in the 16th century. Paracelsus considered them one of the most important of the diminutive spirits, a small, humanoid creature that lives underground.
Gnomes are “elementals” able to move through rocks, walls, and soil as easily as we do through air.

Materials
You’ll need at least two different colors of worsted to delineate the face from the clothes and you may choose to use as many as 4 colors: hat, face, body, boots, beard.
2- 5 colors of small amount of yarn
3.75 mm or 3.5 mm/ F or E hook
Yarn needle
Stuffing/ polyfill
Embroidery thread/contrast yarn unwound or halved for nose
Headed pins/beads/embroidery thread or dark yarn for eyes
Stitch marker suggested to mark rounds.

You could use any yarn weight to make these gnomes.
You could make them smaller - say dk weight with a D/3.25mm hook, or larger -- aran with a G/4.25mm hook. Just be sure that you are working tigthly, so that you can stuff the form and not have the stuffing show.
