Little Jewels hand warmers are accented by several dimensional textures; Entrelac, corrugated ribbing and reverse stockinette stitch. Both of the mitts are knitted the same therefore, they can be worn on either hand – no fussing to find the right or left mitt. These are gender neutral gems, depending on your preferred color scheme -- think vibrant with brilliant hues of azure blue and evergreen or choose subtle shades for a more masculine look. DESIGN DETAILS
For the hand, stitches are cast-on using any long tail method and Entrelac knitting begins at the wrist working four 6 stitch base triangles. The work is joined to commence working in rounds beginning with the second tier of right side rectangles (RS Rec) wherein specified stitches for the thumb gusset are placed on a yarn holder to be worked later. Work continues with a third tier of Entrelac which closes the work. The fourth tier increases the length of the hand warmer and allows adjustments for hand length. The fifth and final round works the end triangles (if not knitting additional tiers for length). Stitches are picked up around the thumb opening and work continues in k1, p1 rib for 11⁄2” or desired length. All rectangles and triangles for this design are worked using six stitches using the Entrelac technique.

Work then begins in the opposite direction by picking up stitches from the cast on edge, and working k2, p2 corrugated ribbing for 3 1⁄2” or 1⁄2 before desired finished length. Contrasting color is cut and work continues with main color only (or color of choice) by knitting six rounds of stockinette stitch. The stockinette stitch edge rolls upward toward the fingers revealing its reverse side leaving a soft pliable edge.

TIERS: I use the term “Tier” to define specific Entrelac groups such as triangles and rectangles for this knitting technique because using the term “row(s)” is not true to the knitting and may be confused with other terminology used for instructions that do pertain to actual rows or rounds. Hopefully, in order to assist the knitter in visualizing the work, I have named the 1st group of knitting Entrelac as the 1st TIER and they are the base triangles; the next group of Entrelac knitting – the 2nd TIER are the right side (RS) rectangles; the next group – the 3rd TIER are the wrong side (WS) rectangles, etc … with each new group of Entrelac knitting being a new “TIER”.

Note: when weaving in ends - do not use cast on edge to hide tails. This edge must be kept clear in order to pick up stitches for working the corrugated ribbing.
