Little Man Waistcoat
The inspiration for this boy’s vest comes from men’s waistcoats from the Regency era, which were often pinstriped or patterned. The lines of the classic garment have been scaled down for the smaller stature of a child. The classic stripes are interpreted here with a technique that’s easier than carrying the yarn along the back of the piece.
NOTES
• This child’s waistcoat is worked back and forth in rows in one piece from the bottom to the armholes, then divided for fronts and back.
• A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches.
• The shoulders are joined using a three-needle bind-off.
• The pinstripes are added with slipstitch crochet.
• When measuring gauge, be sure to work crocheted pinstripes first. The crochet stitches will widen the column of purl stitches, decreasing the number of stitches per inch.
• Knit first and last stitch of every row on the waistcoat to form a selvedge edge for picking up border stitches.
