These little butterfly embellishments are a great way to use up remnants of variegated, hand-dyed or other brightly colored yarn, and may be made from tarn or plarn as well.
They are great as brooches, on hair ties, as embellishments on bags, lanyards or other accessories, or to cover up accidental little holes on children’s clothing.

Butterflies are worked in the round from a filet crochet square base. The beginning and ending tails are tied to create antennae, so no weaving in of ends is required!

– single crochet (sc)
– half double crochet (hdc) = UK half treble

– slip stitch (sl-st)

When using #4 medium weight kitchen cotton, 2 g (4 yards) are required per butterfly.

If using 1/2 inch wide tarn, you will need a US N (9 mm) hook and about 35 g (1.5 oz) of tarn (t-shirt yarn).
