Little Tyke is part of the Born & Bred collection, a book made in partnership with baa ram ewe, the awesome Yorkshire yarn shop taking Yorkshire wool to the world! The book is available in print from baa ram ewe.

The Pattern

Little Tyke is knitted from the bottom up, starting with the single colour rib. Although knitted in the round, the front and back of the tank top (US ‘vest’) have different stranded patterns. The armholes are steeked.

The pattern includes full written instructions, with charts for the colourwork patterns. Steeking instructions are also included. For further clarity you may wish to visit my website, where you will find video tutorials for steeking in the ‘Knitting School’.

The neck and armhole edgings are worked with the smaller needle.

The pattern is available in both A4 and Letter size formats, and all instructions include both US and UK knitting terminology. The pattern includes a full schematic showing metric and imperial measurements.

Yarn requirements

2 balls/skeins (200g) of main colour and 1 ball/skein (100g) of contrast colour in Wensledale Longwool DK. This is a light dk, equivalent to a US sportweight.

History

The stranded patterns in Little Tyke are based on traditional Yorkshire glove patterns from the Yorkshire Dales. Gloves with these patterns dating back over 150 years are illustrated in ’The Old Handknitters of The Dales’ by Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.

’Tyke’ is old slang for any person from Yorkshire.
