The Lizard Socks got its name because the yarn and mosaic pattern give an effect reminiscent of lizard skin.

The socks are designed in mosaic knitting which uses only knit, purl and slip stitches. It’s a very easy way to create a colorwork pattern while only holding one strand of yarn at a time.
The pattern is very easy to memorize.

Lizard Socks have toe-up construction and peasant heel.

To start toe-up sock I use Judy’s Magic Cast-On.
To finish I use Jeny’s Stretchy Bind-Off.

Sizes: S 48 sts (M 56 sts) L 64 sts (XL 72 sts)

Foot circumference: S 18cm/7” (M 20cm/8”) L 23cm/8” (XL 25cm/10”)
Measure around the ball of your foot.
Knitted socks are intended to have a bit of negative ease –it means that your finished sock is going to stretch just a bit on your foot but not as much as the factory made socks. Take your time to get measurements and knit the gauge.

GAUGE:28 sts x 32 rows in PATTERN on a 2 mm (US size 0 / UK size 14) needle = 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”)

NEEDLES: 2 -3 mm (US size 0 - 3 / UK size 14 - 11) sock needles of your choice: DPNS, short circulars or long circular for Magic Loop (min.100cm/39”) or other size you need to obtain the gauge.
I knit rather loosely and usually take needles a size smaller than recommended by the yarn brand. Probably a lot of you would like to use your prefered (for fingering sock yarn) needle size to obtain the gauge.*

MATERIALS:
60–100 gram /250–420 meters / 260-428 yards in total of any fingering weight / 4 ply sock yarn of your choice will work for this pattern in at least two colors (minimal two colors are needed to get a nice colorwork effect but you can use as many colors as you want to be like).

  • sock in size S and foot length 22 cm (8,6); shoe size EU 35-36 (US 5-6 / UK 3-4) was the smallest sock made using this pattern and it took 60 gram/250 meters/260 yards of the yarn in total.
