Loie
NOW AVAILABLE AS A SINGLE PATTERN
Loie: a light and airy summer shawl named after dancer and choreographer Loie Fuller, an early 20th Century pioneer of modernist performance who danced whilst wearing voluminous pleated skirts. The idea of pleated fabric is suggested in the wide rib of the main body of the shawl, whilst movement is echoed in the eyelet and scalloped edge.
Construction
Firstly, the main body of the shawl is knitted from side-to-side in a wide garter rib pattern which echoes the pleats and tucks of cool linen and cotton summer clothing. The addition of regularly placed yarn overs adds to the airiness of the piece whilst also highlighting the linear nature of the shawl. Slipped stitches are worked at the beginning of each row, which allows stitches to be easily picked up for the two borders.
The stitches for the first border are picked up along one edge of the main body and stripes of the same garter rib are worked along the edge. The columns of rib on the border line-up with those in the main body to create an interesting geometric intersection.
Lastly, stitches are picked up along the remaining edge and worked in a simple lace patterning. This results in a beautiful scalloped edge along one side of the shawl, providing an elegant contrast to the linear garter rib sections.

Notes
Main body of the shawl is knitted from side to side in the MC. Stitches are picked up along one edge for the garter rib edging, also in the MC. Using the CC, stitches are then picked up along the opposite edge for the lace edging. Optional markers can be used to mark the garter rib, and also to mark the lace repeats.
