This should go without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway: Do not leave babies unattended in this hat. It is meant purely as a photography prop, not a functional, everyday hat to keep them warm.

This is a pattern that was inspired by Dr. Seuss. I designed it for my cousin who wanted to do a Dr. Seuss photo shoot once her baby was born, and I wanted to make a fun prop for her to use. I knew what I wanted for a pattern, and when I couldn’t find what I had in mind, I decided to make something up.

This hat is a pretty basic hat that is knit in the round, it just has the decreases really spaced out to create the extra long tail. You can use double pointed needles, or if you really hate using them like I do, you can use a longer circular needle and do the magic loop method. Since it only uses around 200 yards of yarn total, it can be used as a nice little stash-busting project.

The finished piece fits a newborn with a 13” circumference, unstretched.
