Long Leggity Beastie
“From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties and all things that go bump in the night.”
My nephew inherited his daddy’s build - long and lean. Because of this, it is hard to find pants for him that are the right length and fit at the waist.
I’d seen patterns for knitted leggings, and knowing I would finish those faster than sewing some, decided to go for it. And then I discovered that most of the leggings patterns were for worsted weight. Since children are known to be rather messy, I thought sock yarn would be a better option. It’s washable, durable, comes in a great many colors, and there’s a good possibility that I have some….
The pattern as written does not include feet, but you are welcome to add them or to make the legs even longer.
Sizing
The ribbing enables the leggings to be worn by a larger variety of sizes. The only variation is in the amount of ease. Use the circumference of the tummy to determine size. The small is about 11 inches unstretched and the large is about 13 inches unstretched. The waist and legs can be worked to whatever length is necessary.
The model (my nephew) is pictured in the small (multi-colored) leggings at 5 months old wearing a 6 month onesie. He is 3 1/2 months old in the large (red) leggings and wearing a 3 month onesie. At the time of pattern publication, he is almost 7 months old, wears a 6-9 month onesie and both sizes still fit. If you are unsure, make the large size, baby will be able to wear it longer.
Gauge
7 1/2 stitches in 1 inch (2.5cm). Gauge is measured in stockinette worked in the round. Don’t panic if gauge is a little off. The pattern is very forgiving and stretchy.
Yarn
I used Socks that Rock LW, fingering weight with 405 yards in 146g. The small leggings took about 283 yards and the large used slightly over 360 yards.
