Materials
- Marigoldjen Yarns BLF Extra Long Sock (100% Bluefaced Leicester) 1 skein = 655
yds/599m per 5.29 oz/150g. Substitute any fingering weight yarn of approx 400yds/100g.
- US #1.5 (2.5mm) needles for working in the round: DPNs, 1 long circular or 2 short
circulars, as you prefer, or size needles required to obtain gauge.
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers.

This sock is knit from the cuff down. The instructions reference the sole and instep stitches rather than specifying needles, allowing you to use your preferred method. Additionally, if you need to customize the circumference of the sock, you can do so by adding or decreasing the number of stockinette stitches to the sides.

This sock is chock-a-block with cables, which will pull the yarn in a bit. Please take this into consideration when choosing your size and the yardage.

For this pattern, I wanted to create something cabley, reminscent of Scandinavian or Aran cabled sweaters but in sock form. When it came time to name the pattern, I wanted to call it Svalbard, in honour of one of the stops on an amazing 2 week Arctic expedition cruise I was meant to take in Sep 2021 to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary and a milestone bday. But there’s lots of Svalbard patterns already, so I chose Longbearyen. Longyearbyen is the starting point of the cruise in Norway, but I always remember it as Longbearyen. Since the cruise covers Norway, Iceland and the Shetland islands, all of whom love cabled knitwear, it seemed a great name. Enjoy these cabley feet sweaters!
