Longevity
Longevity is a simple but versatile pattern with an oriental twist. It’s great for blankets, cushions, hot pads, pot holders, place mats, table runners, scarves etc. It uses basic overlay mosaic crochet techniques so is idea for the adventurous beginner in this method.

-- INSPIRATION --
It was inspired by a beautiful Chinese jewellery box I was given as a child. I had always been fascinated by the symbol on the lid. I have subsequently discovered is it the Longevity or Shou symbol, representing one of the Five Blessings in Chinese beliefs. After a lot of research and experimentation, the pattern you see is the result!
-- WHAT IS INCLUDED --
- Mosaic chart (both dark on light and light on dark) with customary Xs.
- Stitch sequences
- Ideas on different colour combinations
- Repeats with associated yarn amounts and sizing
- Hints and tips
- A separate document covering a double envelope border using the surface chain method
There is also a BONUS pattern (chart only), which flips the colour of the central square and motif without the need for tapestry crochet techniques. This is a 36-row x 36-column repeat, as opposed to the 38-row x 38-column repeat in the main pattern. This was arranged by Mootje can Gestel.
-- YARN REQUIREMENTS --
Based on Stylecraft Life DK (turquoise) and Stylecraft Bellissima DK (cream) and a 4.00 mm hook, the 4 across by 5 down blanket shown took, approximately:
Colour A - Dark - Background: 1200 m
Colour B - Light - Pattern: 1000 m
As a guide, each 38-stitch/row repeat takes, approximately:
Colour A - Dark - Background: 57 m
Colour B - Light - Pattern: 47 m
A complete sizing and yarn amounts table is given in the pattern.
This does not include the envelope border or surface chain. Please allow extra for any borders or finishing.
-- SIZING --
Size of the final project will depend on the number of repeat, yarn, hook and tension. However, the main sample blanket measured, approximately, 8” x 8” (20cm x 20cm) per repeat.
-- YOU WILL ALSO NEED --
- A hook size recommended on the yarn band.
- A hook smaller than that used for the body of the blanket or the border flaps and final join.
- A hook larger than that used for the body of the blanket for the surface chain (optional).
- Darning needle.
- Scissors.
- Optional cushion pad 1” larger than the finished cushion panel.
