Longwool Mitts
This pattern is the result of another collaboration with the fabulous Border Tart. It is a pattern to knit a pair of fingerless mitts in stranded colour work, featuring a sheep in a meadow dotted with flowers ( day version) or a sheep at night with stars ( night version). The reverse consists of a regular pattern reminiscent of looking down on a flock of sheep from the air.
Yarn used for the samples in the pattern:
For green and white “day” version: MC: Sun of Jupiter 4 ply (75% Blue Faced Leicester, 25% Masham), 50g in Meadow Green C: Bluefaced Sock yarn, 50g in creamy white. C2:Sun of Jupiter 4 ply (75% Blue Faced Leicester, 25% Masham), 20g in Cornfield, for edging and “flower” motifs.
For blue and white “ night” version: MC: Sun of Jupiter 4 ply (75% Blue Faced Leicester, 25% Masham),50g in Dark Night C: Bluefaced Sock yarn, 50g in creamy white. C2:Sun of Jupiter 4 ply (75% Blue Faced Leicester, 25% Masham), 20g in Cornfield, for edging and “star” motifs.
Or other 4ply sock yarn in your own choice of colours.
Size: fits an average adult woman’s hand, but can easily be adjusted for other sizes by using different needles, and/ or altering the lengths of the ribbing.
The pattern is also available as a kit from The Border Tart’s web site www.tartsart.co.uk.
I have written this pattern with knitters, who may be new to stranded knitting, in mind. You Tube is a veritable mine of information for any techniques you may not be familiar with, such as “catching” the floats (long strands carried behind your knitting), and doing left, or right-leaning lifted increases. Remember, THERE ARE NO KNITTING POLICE!!! If you want to do something a different way, feel free, and just enjoy the ride……
