Lonstrup Scarf
This scarf takes its name from a little village in Jutland in the north of Denmark: Lønstrup (native spelling).
On the big shifting dune near Lønstrup there stands a lighthouse that holds an intriguing secret, the ‘Rubjerg Knude Fyr’. In 2019 it was moved seventy meters away from the dune cliff, because it threatened to fall down the cliff that is constantly eaten away by the tide, the wind, and the weather.
The design of this scarf represents all the wonderful features of the area around this little village; the ocean, the heathland, where lots of Buckthorn bushes can be found, and the mighty dune with the signature lighthouse.
I found the original yarn at the lovely local yarn shop Knudegarn while on holiday in Lønstrup. It’s a fingering weight yarn, hand dyed with natural plant colors, and made from the wool of local organic sheep.
It can be substituted with any fingering weight yarn, preferably on the thicker side.
The construction:
The central motif is knit separately. From the sides of it stitches are picked up for the identical side panels that are worked outwards to the tips of the scarf.
The features:
The lighthouse, ‘Fyr‘ in Danish, is represented by a star motif in seed stitch. It’s the central motif in the middle of the scarf.
The identical side panels are made up of the following stitch patterns:
A pattern of long vertical waves, using decreases and increases, stands for the Dune.
Buckthorn, which is represented by a grid of bobbles, is a common ingredient in the local cuisine.
A slip stitch pattern gives you an impression of the complex texture of the heathland.
The ocean is depicted by a horizontal pattern of tiny waves that is made up of twisted stitches.
The original yarn can be purchased online at knudegarn.dk. (If ordering from the website choose 2 skeins of 400 m pr 100 g, it’s the equivalent to Fingering weight and the yardage I used in the sample)
