Lost in Faerie Socks
For the month of Sock-tober, if you buy two of my sock patterns, you can get a third of your choice for free!
If you read a lot of fantasy books like I do, you might have noticed that faeries/fairies/fay/fey (however you want to spell it) have been having a bit of a moment the last few years, and with good reason. And if you don’t read a lot of fantasy, it bears pointing out that this brand of faerie isn’t quite of the Tinkerbell variety. Think darker, bloodthirstier, more in line with their roots in Irish and Scottish folklore.
This stitch pattern is supposed to look like butterflies, but all I see are fairies, albeit the more storybook variety, and it got me thinking about the books I love that feature fairies in all of their many forms. But be warned--these socks might just be charming enough catch the attention of the fey and that can be a dangerous thing indeed..
The Lost In Faerie Socks are knitted cuff down, with the picot hem folded over and knitted together with the top of the leg, then the engaging and easy to memorize lace pattern begins.
If you’re looking for something to read/listen to while you knit, the pattern includes a list of books that I think pair particularly well with this pattern for maximum escapism!
Sizes:
Small: 15.25cm/6in
Medium: 17.75cm/7in
Large: 20.3/8in
To figure out which size to knit, measure around the ball of your foot at the widest part. Most people like their socks to fit a little snug so if you’re between sizes, I recommend knitting the smaller size. The size only refers to the width of the sock, the length can be customized as you knit.
Gauge:
36 stitches x 40 rows per 10cm/4in
Yarn:
Fingering weight – 50 (60, 70) grams based on average foot length of 23cm/9in so you may need more or less depending on your measurement.
I used Kremke Soul Would Edelweiss in Salmon.
Needles:
The pattern is written for small (23cm/9in) circular needles, switching to double pointed needles or Magic Loop for the toe decreases, but can be worked using double pointed needles or Magic Loop throughout, according to your preference. I use 2.25mm needles, but use whichever size gets you the above listed gauge.
Notions:
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers (2 for marking the heel, 2 more if using 23cm/9inch circular needles.
