LOTR Gandalf the Gray Amigurumi
Finished size: Doll with hat: approx. 6 inches. Doll without hat: approx. 4 inches tall. Doll base width: approx. 3 inches. Width of hat brim: approx. 3.5 inches.
Gauge and tension: 10 single crochet stitches x 10 rows = about 2 inches square. Depending on your tension and yarn choice, finished size may vary, but the finished toy size isn’t very important. Ideally, you will want snug, dense stitches that will not show the stuffing.
Materials:
--E hook (3.5 mm)
--(2) 9mm black plastic eyes with safety backing (Darice brand available at JoAnn’s crafts or Amazon.com).
--Gray, white, and light tan worsted-weight yarn (4-ply, medium weight). One skein of each color will provide ample amounts for making many dolls. I recommend using the same brand yarn for all colors for uniform width, sheen and texture. Red Heart, Vanna’s Choice, or Loops & Threads Impeccable Worsted are good choices for dolls.
--A few inches inches of black yarn or embroidery floss for stitching the mouth.
--For stuffing: polyester fiberfill, 1/4 to 1/2 cup dry beans, grains, or plastic pellets, and nylon stocking (for encasing beans within doll).
--For staff: wooden shisk-ke-bab skewer cut off at about 6 inches, or same height as finished doll. Alternatively, you can use a wooden chopstick or 1/8-inch dowel.
--Tapestry needle, large-headed pins, and scissors for finishing off and sewing parts together.
