Gauge is not crucial for this cushion. The size of the cushion may vary depending on the size of the yarn and the hook you use. So, if you use thicker yarn, the cushion will become bigger and with thinner yarn, it will be smaller. To avoid holes, where the filling is showing through, you should use a smaller hook than the smallest recommended hook for your yarn.
