This is a pattern for stranded colourwork mittens. They are knit using charts.
There are 56 stitches in the main chart. Different gauges will give different sizes. Choose yarn and needle size to obtain the gauge that will give you the right size. 24 sts/10 cm or 4’’ after blocking gives a women’s medium size that is a little roomy. There is a formula in the pattern that will help you determine the gauge you need for the desired size.

The pattern uses about 50-60 g (105-126 m/115-130 yards) of main/background colour and about 20-30 g (42-63 m/46-69 yards) of contrasting colour(s). You might get away with just one 50 g skein of yarn in the background colour, but to be sure you don’t run out of yarn, I advise you to get two 50 g skeins.

You can use one contrasting colour throughout. Or alternate between two or more. Or use scraps so that each stripe of hearts has a different colour. It’s all up to you! One complete stripe of hearts on two mittens should use approximately 4-5 g (about 9-11 m/yards).

In this pattern, the hearts are alternating open (background colour in the middle of the heart) and filled (contrasting colour in the middle of the heart). It is possible to knit only open hearts or only filled hearts. Do as you wish! Knitting only hearts that are filled will use more of the contrasting colour and less of the background colour, and knitting only hearts that are open will do the reverse.
