Loving memory
This shawlette was created in loving memory of days gone by. Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I remember my grandmother’s shelves decorated with handmade lace edgings, mostly crochet (cipca – an old Romanian term for small crochet lace). Featuring a knitted lace border, this shawlette is meant to evoke nostalgia and perhaps the feeling of a warm hug from a loved one of the past. I’m offering two yarn options: one is a New Zealand luxury blend of merino/possum/silk from Touch Yarns, and the other is the popular Jody Long Alba, a luxurious tweed blend of merino/alpaca/viscose. These yarns are not held double; simply choose one option—4.0 mm needles for the first, or 4.5 mm for the second. My knitting style is very loose, so if yours is firmer, consider going up a size. Finished dimensions are: Option 1 – 160 cm wingspan x 60 cm deep; Option 2 – 168 cm wingspan x 65 cm deep. Alternatives include about 400–450 m of suitable sport weight yarn. This design works in almost any weight—just use appropriately sized needles, ideally 1–2 sizes larger than the band suggests for a nice drape. The crescent-shaped shawlette is knit from tip to tip with the lace border worked at the same time. The pattern includes both written instructions and a lace chart, plus helpful notes in each section. It’s easy to adjust for a larger size if desired. May it bring back fond memories.
