This is a casually knit, garter stitch slightly asymetrical shawl or wrap knit from side to side. This versatile piece may be worn as a cape, a shawl/wrap, or a cowl.
Knit in worsted weight mohair on oversize needles it is light and airy but will provide plenty of warmth if the need arises simply by folding it and wrapping it closer in around the neck.
This was designed for my friend Lucky … she is my friend now. She was my mother-in-law years ago when I was married to one of her sons. Though the marriage didn’t last, my connection with my then-in-laws remained strong and over the years we have become good friends.
Lucky is an amazing woman … for many more reasons than I would have space to write here. She lives in the San Francisco/Bay Area of California and spends at least at month in NYC each autumn. I thought she could use a wrap like this on both coasts, because it can get quite chilly in the SF area, and autumn in NYC is bound to have a good chill at times.
You will need size U.S. 19 knitting needles and 240 to 300 yards of worsted weight mohair yarn. I bought my yarn at the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival this past September from an indie yarn artist who does not sell online. So, I can’t recommend a specific mohair yarn though I do specifically recommend mohair for this piece because the fluff of the mohair will fill in the spaces left by knitting garter stitch on such large needles. This will add warmth also, when warmth is needed.
This slightly asymmetrical piece incorporates short rows along one edge to create gentle, somewhat random ruffles on the lower half. These short rows are super easy to work, so please don’t worry about them.
