Lucy Lamb
Lucy Lamb is cute lamb knitted toy. She has a realistic style, yet is of a simple design and has a cute charm.
Lucy is a cheerful member of our household, she lives with her friends Rebecca Rabbit, Mischief Monkey, Leonard Lion and Freddie Fox. All five are much loved by the tiny humans and their friends!
She is quick and simple to knit, using any yarn that you wish. I have knitted her as a black-faced lamb, but she could equally be knitted as an all white lamb, or in a bright variegated yarn for a more contemporary look. Use any thickness of yarn, thicker - larger lamb, thinner yarn a tiny, cute lamb. The lamb in the pictures here was knitted in a chunky yarn on 6mm needles. She is about 30cm high (tiptoe to top of head). If you were to use a 4ply yarn and 3mm needles, she would be about half size at 15cm high. Generally I recommend using a needle size a bit smaller than that suggested for the yarn, you will want to knit quite a tight fabric, so that the stuffing doesn’t show through.
If knitting in DK (Sport) weight yarn, you will need approx 25g of the main colour (white). For an aran (Worsted) weight you will need approx 70g, and for a chunky yarn, approx 100g. The contrast colour (grey) requires approx 10g of DK, 20g aran or 30g chunky.
This pattern has instructions to knit using straight needles (flat pieces), OR in the round using a circular needle. If knitting in the round, you can avoid much of the sewing up! You will need to use the magic loop technique to knit the small pieces in the round, a tutorial for this is included. If you are not so comfortable with knitting in the round, or do not have a circular needle handy, then the pattern pieces can be easily knitted on straight needles, and sewn up later.
The pattern knits each body part separately, then these are stitched together to create a lamb of pleasing structure. Soft and slightly floppy in the limbs, yet firm enough to sit up unaided.
The tail is made with a loosely crocheted chain, or a plait, and the face embroidered with yarn scraps.
This pattern includes 2 pdf downloads, one with UK terminology and one using US terms. Lucy’s friends, Freddie, Mischief, Leonard & Rebecca are also available in other listings.
