Suunnittelin nämä kauniit kämmekkäät jo lähes vuosikymmen sitten. Asuin tuolloin pienessä, vanhassa talossa, jossa oli kehno lämmitys. Talvi oli melko kylmä (tyypillisesti lähempänä -20°C) ja muistan käyttäneeni paksuja vaatteita sisälläkin.

Kämppikseni ja minä istuimme huoneessani, jota valaisi tunnelmallisen hämärä lamppu. Hän neuloi sinapinkeltaista kaulahuivia ja minä räpläsin jämälankojeni. elintarvikevaa’an ja orastavan ohjeen kanssa. Ensimmäisen parin neuloin oranssista, ruosteenoranssista ja valkoisesta puuvillalangasta. Olen käyttänyt niitä monissa vetoisissa toimistoissa. Toisen parin neuloin valkoisesta ja sinisen sävyisistä villalangoista. Ne toivat mieleeni pohjoisen yötaivaan ja valkoisen lumen horisontin, josta nimi Lumen raja.

Käsivarteni ja käteni ovat hyvin hoikat, joten ohje on hentoisille käsille. Ympärysmittaa voi kuitenkin näppärästi muuttaa lisäämällä 8s (≈ 3 cm) kuviojaksoja, ja pituutta lisätä neulomalla pari riviä enemmän sileää neuletta.

Novitan Wool, Nalle ja Tennesee langat käyvät kaikki, mutta neuleen tiheys saattaa hieman vaihdella puikkomateriaalin ja –koon mukaan.

Tarvitset projektiisi 3 mieleistäsi väriä, noin puoli kerää (= 25 g) jokaista. Varmista kuitenkin että sinulla on hieman ylimäärin lankaa, ettei se lopu kesken, etenkin jos teet suuremman koon. Lisäksi tarvitset 3 mm paksuiset sukkapuikot ja parsinneulan viimeistelyä varten.

I designed these beautiful fingerless mittens already almost a decade ago, when I was living in a tiny old house with a very poor heating. The winter was quite cold (typically round zero and -20°C in southern Finland) and I remember using pretty warm clothes even indoor.

My flatmate and I sat in my room lit by a cosy dim light, she knitting a mustard yellow scarf and me fiddling with my leftover yarns, a kitchen scale and a new idea for a pattern. The first pair I made of these gloves were from orange, rusty orange and white coloured cotton yarn. Since then they have come at hand a lot in drafty offices. The second pair I knit was with white and two shades of blue merino wool yarn. They made me think of the horizon of a snowy ground and the very dark night sky, hence the name Lumen raja (Edge of snow).

My forearms and hands are very slim so the pattern size is for petit arms. However, this is an easily adjustable pattern, as vertically 8st (≈ 3 cm) periods in the pattern can be easily multiplied to produce larger perimetre. Longer mittens just requires an adding of few more rows of stockinette.

Novita Wool, Novita Nalle, Novita Tennesee yarns or similar yarns can all be used, but the gauge may vary slightly depending on the needle material and size used.

You will need three colours of your liking, around half a bundle (= 25 g) of each. Make sure you have a little bit more than this, not to experience any inconveniences with yarn running out, especially if you are making a bigger size. You will need double point needles in size 3 mm and a seaming needle to finish the yarn ends.
