SIZE:
One Size – Finished Blocked Measurements: 52” diameter (132 cm diameter)

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Artistic Sport yarn

Shown in colors: Aesthetic (C1), Sublime (C2), & Adept (C3) 325 yd/297 m; approx. 3.5 oz/100 g per skein

If those colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.

You will need 1 skein each of C1 and C2 and 2 skeins of C3. Because you will use nearly all of C1, you may wish to knit your gauge swatch in C3.

300 to 480 yds (274 to 439 m) of each color were used in the sample, approx. total 1061 yds/970 m; C1: 300 yds/274 m, C2: 281 yds/257 m, & C3: 480 yds/439 m.

Be sure to order all you need for your project because once these colors are gone, they are gone!

NEEDLES:

US size 6 (4.00 mm) 16-60” circular knitting needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
US size 6 (4.00 mm) double pointed needles (DPNs), or size needed to obtain gauge
US size G (4.00 mm) crochet hook for Magic Ring Cast On

As the shawl grows in size, you will need to increase the length of your cable.

Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include the Magic Ring cast on or other adjustable ring cast-on method, lace stitches, and working with two colors at the same time and carrying yarn up the back of the work.

Notes from the Designer:

Lumin is a knitted, circular pi shawl that features a radiating, lacy design and a subtle, gradient fade in three colors. The Lumin shawl is knitted flat using three colors of sport weight yarn. You’ll begin with an adjustable ring cast on, and then knit in the round across six sections. With each section, you’ll double the number of stitches, and double the number of rows, give or take a few rows. Three different, eyelet lace patterns create an open and airy, highly textured design.

  • Click here to watch a video about the shawl and the limited edition Artistic Sport yarn we used to make it.
  • This circular pi shawl is knitted flat and begins with a Magic Ring cast on. You can also use any another adjustable ring cast-on method of your choice. You may find that it’s easier to transfer your cast-on stitches to DPNs and complete the first few sections using DPNs, rather than your circular needles.
  • In a pi shawl, each section is twice as deep as the previous section (give or take a few rows), and each section has double the number of stitches as the previous section.
  • Throughout this pattern at the end of each section, you will double the number of stitches by working repeats of (k1, yo). When a yarn over is situated next to the stitch marker, make sure that the yarn over doesn’t slip over the top of the stitch marker before working the stitch on the following round. Also, when you are working the first few sections, be careful not to drop the final yarn over off of your needles.
  • At times, you’ll work with two colors of yarn at the same time. You can carry your non-working yarn up the back until you’re instructed to break the yarn.
  • Because this is a large shawl and you will be working with many stitches on your needles, I highly recommend using lifelines. You may also wish to place stitch markers to keep track of your lace repeats and/or stitch counts.
  • Be sure to check your gauge against mine to ensure that you have enough yarn to complete the pattern. Because this pattern uses almost all of C1, you’ll want to monitor your gauge to ensure it doesn’t loosen up as you progress. I recommend using C3 to knit your gauge swatch. If you think you might run short of C1 or C2, you can transition to the next color earlier than indicated in the pattern. Just alternate two rounds of your working yarn with two rounds of the following yarn across 14 rounds (if possible) or fewer (if needed), to create a smooth gradient transition.
