The original yarn for these socks is a 2-ply handspun of natural white medium wool. The project does have charts but does not list systematic written directions. The amount of yarn needed was not listed in either yards or meters. There is a chart to guide sizing efforts on page 103, possibly including these socks as a “heavy” sock due to the recommended gauge, for which the amount 8-10 ounces is supplied. This amount is only a recommendation and varies by knitter.

On page 24, there is a discussion of the original socks, with a toe-up construction and an inserted heel. The charts here are for side panel and leg. There is more information in the “Samplers” section on page 93. The pattern there uses a straight wrap cast on and constructs the socks using methods described in the “Construction Techniques” section of the book. Page 93 also has additional charts for the leg and a 6-stitch side panel.
