MACHINE KNIT HEXIPUFFS
A good way to use up scrap yarn. I’ve read that most handknitters give up on these after making about a dozen or so, as they are a small project, but take time to handknit. On the knitting machine, these take only about 20 minutes or so each.
These motifs can be joined in any number of ways to make hot pads, wall hangings, blankets, throws, etc. Or you can make larger ones, by continuing on with the increases and decreases to make items like purses and 1-motif chair cushions.
Have fun making them, and I hope you’ll post your versions.

Knit, sewing as you go, stuffed or not, these are finished when you take them off the machine.
Materials: Scrap worsted weight yarn, polyester stuffing, or no stuffing.
Machine: LK150, Tension 9, or Bulky 260, Tension 6
You can sew them together at the corners only, to make hotpads, chairpads, wallhangings, quilts, whatever.
WP = working position; COR = carriage on right; NW =non working position; ndl = needle; ndl = needle; c/o = cast on
INSTRUCTIONS
Begin increase rows as follows:
- E-wrap c/o 10 stitches (ndls 5-5)
- Knit 2 rows (COR) Hang weights
- Add 1 ndl to hold position on carriage side (but don’t set machine to hold)
- Knit 1 row
- Repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are 20 stitches in WP (ndls 10/10) (COR) Place a marker on the last loop knitted, on each end, and rehang weights
Begin decrease rows as follows:
- With 3 prong tool, more stitches 10, 9, 8 on carriage side, onto ndls 6, 7, 8 (two needles will be empty) Put vacated/empty needle in NWP position, leaving empty needle 9 in working position.
- Knit 1 row
- Repeat rows 6 and 7 in this manner, until there are 10 stitches left in WP (ndls 5/5)
- Place a marker on the last loop made on each side of the work.
- Knit 2 rows even (COR)
Begin second increase rows as follows:
- Bring 1 ndl on carriage side to working position, on carriage side, and hang the marked loop onto it.
- Continue row 11 until 20 ndls have stitches on them. (ndls 10/10)
Begin second decrease rows as follows:
- With 2 prong tool, move stitches 9 and 10 inward to ndls 8 and 9. Then hang the next loop on ndl 9, and put empty ndl 10 in NWP.
- Repeat in this manner, until 10 stitches remain. (ndls 5/5)
- At this point, if you want a stuffed hexagon, do the stuffing.
- Rehang the outside strand of the e-wrap cast-on stitches onto the remaining 10 stitches. (there will be 2 stitches on each needle)
- Cut yarn, leaving about 10 inches for castoff.
- Using a double-eyed needle, overcast these stitches off together from the needles, and fasten.
Hide the ends inside the hexagon..
