Machnamh
About the pattern:
Machnamh (pronounced Macnah) is the Irish word for reflection, which seemed an appropriate name for this sleeveless waistcoat/vest since it is worked in stocking stitch on one section and reverse stocking stitch on the other – one reflecting the other.
Featuring The Fibre Co. Arranmore yarn, Innisfree is a collection of designs inspired by the reflective mood of William Butler Yeats’ poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” which begins with the words “I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree…I will arise and go now, for always night and day, I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore.”
GARMENT MEASUREMENTS
One size fits most with a relaxed fit on smaller sizes and more close fitting when fastened on larger sizes. For more overlap or a more relaxed fit simply cast on 4 extra stitches at beginning and end of the cast on row to give 2 inches extra front wrap ensuring armholes remain centered.

TENSION
- 14 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm (4 in) measured over st st using 6mm (US 10) needles.
- 14 sts and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in seed (moss in UK) stitch pattern using 6mm (US 10) needles.
- It is important to check your tension before starting to knit your garment as the tension governs the finished size. If you work to the wrong tension, your garment will not measure the same as the one shown in the photograph and you may run out of yarn, or need to buy more.
- Check your tension by knitting a swatch at least 12 cm (5 in) square. If there are more sts and rows to 10 cm (4 in) than stated, try again using thicker needles. If there are less sts and rows to 10 cm (4 in) than stated, try again using thinner needles.
- Yarn quantities are based on average requirements and are therefore approximate.
