Here is a clever little pattern for you to knit your own plait style hairband (or maybe it could be a necklace?) it is simple but has an exciting construction!

I have designed this pattern with DK yarn in mind, but you could experiment with different weights to see what effects you can create.

To complete the pattern you will need to know how to do simple knit and purl stitches, plus casting on and off mid row (I suggest using a cable cast on which you can find lots of instruction videos for on youtube)
