This cropped circular yoke top is an adorable homage to the magical girl genre with some gender fun thrown in. Girls, boys, and anyone who doesn’t fit into our arbitrary binary are encouraged to enjoy this pattern with any colors they like! The colorwork design harkens back to shows like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura, with hearts and (optional topstitched) sparkles abound.

Notes
I tried to keep the number of colors being used together at two, but the heart in the middle of the design requires 3 colors simultaneously, as do portions of the wings in the Magical Boy chart.
You can add “sparkles” to the chart wherever you like to keep floats shorter, or you can do as I did on my first knit and “catch” the longer floats every four to five stitches. It is very important to check your tension regularly if you use this second method, as it lends itself to bunching very easily. I would recommend stretching your stitches out every repeat, if not twice every repeat, to keep it from scrunching up too much.
