Whiteowlcrochetco. Magnetic Hoodie

The Magnetic Hoodie knitting pattern is my first complex-rated knitting pattern, but don’t let that scare you! Once you’ve mastered the new-to-you techniques everything will be smooth sailing, and you’ll have some new tools in your knitting toolbox for your next makes!

This sweater is worked from the wristbands in to the shoulders, side-to-side instead of top-down or bottom-up. This means you’ll get your sleeves out of the way first! Woo!

The criss-cross design also provides easy-access and coverage to nursing mothers, a feature raised by one of my amazing pattern testers.

Techniques
Note: video tutorials linked within pattern!

  • Provisional Cast On (wristbands and sides of body) - Highly recommend provisional cast-on around a spare cord or silicon cord, or Judy’s Magic Cast-on!
  • Knitting in the round and flat
  • Picking up stitches (sleeves and hood)
  • Increasing/Decreasing
  • Binding off of stitches to decrease faster
  • Japanese Short Rows - fully described & photo tutorial provided
  • I-Cord Edge
  • I-Cord Drawstring
  • Grafting

Pattern Tester Feedback

“This is hands-down the coolest project I’ve ever made. The construction is mind-blowing and I learned so many new techniques!”
– Chris H., @slitheringstitch on Instagram

“I loved the unique construction of this piece because it kept me interested the whole time. Plus as a fat knitter, I could tell that the pattern was graded well when the wrists and sleeves fit me the same as the modelled photos shown in the images in the pattern. Mollie was a perfect test knitting host – very responsive to feedback and questions through the whole several-month-long testing period. Overall loved working on this sweater.”
– Monica M., @Quarrelsomerhino on Instagram

“This is a pattern with an unconventional construction which makes it perfectly challenging and interesting project. You will be able to test many techniques (casting over a spare cord, making an applied I-cord, Japanese short rows, picking up stitches, grafting), the pattern provides links to all of them and also includes loads of helpful tips. I found that the most challenging part was the hood. You might want to ensure your head is available and well rested when approaching the key steps, like when starting a new section of the project. Once you’re set, it’s a breeze!”
