Μαίανδρος (Maiandros): The ancient deity of the river meander in the classical kingdom of Phrygia. The characteristic curves and bends of this river gave rise to the name of the decorative meander patterns typical for Greek and Roman art.
A classic, elegant pattern that comes in 5 sizes, works up quickly and can be made in various colour combinations: Maiandros Mitts are a great stashbuster and make a useful gift for kids and adults, friends and family!
The colourwork pattern is created with the mosaic slip stitch technique, so that every round uses only one colour at a time. The mitts are worked in the round from the cuff to the fingers, with a fully shaped thumb gusset and a ribbed stripe at the edge of the hand ensuring a good fit.
Skills required
Knitting and purling in the round over a small circumference, working twisted stitches and basic increases and decreases, picking up stitches.
Notions
- Stitch markers
- A length of scrap yarn
- Darning needle
Yarn
You will need one main colour (MC) and one contrasting colour (CC) of DK or light worsted weight yarn.
MC: 44 (65, 92, 106, 138) m / 48 (71, 101, 116, 151) yards
CC: 18 (28, 30, 35, 48) m / 20 (31, 33, 39, 53) yards
Sizes
The pattern includes instructions for five sizes, intended to fit a variety of hands. Based on circumference, they roughly correspond to:
1: small child (3–5 years)
2: child to adult XS
3: adult S
4: adult M–L
5: adult XL
Length can be adjusted by adding or omitting rounds at the cuff or upper hand.
Varying yarn weight and needle size will give you additional options between the suggested sizes (note that the required yardage may then deviate from the one given in the pattern).
