My friend Maile is a transplant from her native Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest. The shawl named in her honor is inspired by her namesake, the Maile vine. This beautiful and fragrant vine features prominently in Hawaiian leis.

Maile is a triangle shawl, knit from the center neck out and downward. The pattern is infinitely customizable, with easily changed sizes and fabric drape, depending on the number of pattern repeats, the weight of yarn, and the gauge of the needles you choose to use. The model shawl was knit for the last days of summer and early autumn, just enough to keep the shoulders warm and gorgeous, but not enough to overheat in the long awaited summer weather we’re having in Seattle!

The model shawl (on Maile!) is the smaller version of the pattern, made of Berroco Alpaca Ultra Fine in color way 1275 (Pea Soup Mix) on size 7 needles. It measures 110 cm from point to point along the top edge, and 55 cm from the neck to the bottom point.
