Maiya' kma
Felting experience recommended for best results
A collection of felted wool bags, inspired by Native American baskets of local indigenous people from the mountain where I live. Four sizes, four charts, and with several features to choose from, including a unique shaped bottom, or straight bind-off, optional buttoned flap, one or two straps. Pattern includes variations of different gauge -- from jumbo tote, iphone or kindle pouch, (non-felted) “Itty Bitty Ditty Bag”, and four sizes of simple round baskets.
Nesting wool baskets anyone?
The fertile Napa Valley lies beneath the Mayacamas mountain range, off of which headwaters run down volcanic slopes and feed into the tidal river running up the length of the valley. It is said that the indigenous Wappo people who inhabited the valley named the mountain range “Maiya’ kma” said to mean “howling mountain lion“.
Today the mountain range is called Mayacamas. The Wappo were known for their well-made baskets, and to me basket weaving and knitted felted bags are craft cousins!
