The Major Ursa hat was designed for the 75th World Science Fiction Convention i Helsinki, Finland 9.-13. August 2017. It was inspired by the convention artwork, and features spaceships, star constellations and of course the Major Ursa herself.

The hat can be made in two different versions. The stranded hat is suitable for the more advanced knitter. It has a slouchy look and fits a medium adult head. The easy stockinette hat with four sizes can be customized by using any of the motifs from the stranded hat chart, as well as sewing on a convention badge. It is recommended to use high contrast colourways.

Sizes:
Stranded hat: One size (medium adult)
Stockinette hat: Child (small adult, medium adult) large adult

Needles:
US 2 1/2 (3 mm), 16” (40 cm) circular needle, or size needed to obtain rib gauge, US 4 (3.5 mm), 16” (40 cm) circular needle and set of DPN’s, or size needed to obtain stockinette gauge.

Notions:
Tapestry needle. 1 stitch marker. Optional: Pom pom maker.
For the stranded hat: 10 additional stitch markers.
For the stockinette hat: Sewing thread and needle for sewing on the badge.

Stockinette hat:
• Child size: 1 skein Novita Nordic Wool 184 Petrol
• All other sizes: 2 skeins Novita Nordic Wool 184 Petrol
• 1 skein Novita Nordic Wool 444 Grey for duplicate stitching

Gauge and measurements:
Gauge: 28 stitches and 28 rows per 4” (10cm) in rib pattern. 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4” (10cm) in stockinette pattern.
To fit head circumference: 20 inches/53 cm (21 inches/56 cm, 22 inches/58 cm) 23 inches/61 cm.
