Makahiki Mystery Shawl KAL
Join the Makahiki (Hawaiian meaning “year”) year-long KAL! You’ll use beautiful, fingering weight Lazer Sock yarn from Lazer Sheep in 12 colors. This colorful, lacy, fun KAL is a collaboration between Sharon Mooney Designs, Lazer Sheep Yarn Company, and Hands On Knitting Center.
You’ll receive the materials list now, then on the 10th day of each month of 2018 you will receive notification to download the next clue. Each clue uses a “Lazer Lamb” skein of Lazer Sock. These little skeins are 97 yards long. You’ll use a different color each month.
The shawl is boldly colorful (as is Hawaii) and shines with occasional beading. Each section uses a different color of Lazer Sheep yarn. The drape and shape make it easy to wear and fashionable!
Beads are used in the shawl sparingly and are optional. Full instructions for adding beads are included in the pattern. All of the beads used are Miyuki 6/0 glass beads. They are so pretty and easy. Beads add a lovely touch of sparkle and a little weight to this interesting shawl.), you will need the following:
February Clue - 189 of color #F463N
May Clue - 177 of color #F1
August Clue - 87 of color #F3990
November Clue - 140 of color #399J
You will also need a size US 13/14 or .75mm or .85mm steel crochet hook for hooking on the beads (it’s easy and full instructions are included in pattern). Beads are added only to the four sections of solid/tonal colors of yarn.
The shawl is a long assymetrical triangle shape. The 12 colors are added in a way that each color is related to the one before and the one after it. The shawl is made up of 12 different simple lace patterns that blend from one to the next. You could also opt for one color yarn instead of the 12 colors used in the pattern. You will still have the wedge shaped sections for interest.
A small cable needle is needed for the March Clue
The shawl is shaped into wedges of color inside the main big assymetrical triangle. Short rows and wraps and turns are used to get the lovely shape. Complete instructions for these are included in the pattern.
Yarn kits are for sale through Hands On Knitting Center.

UPDATE, JAN 11, 2018:
I’ve been mightily humbled to find mistakes in the written directions for the chart in the January Clue of Makahiki MKAL pattern in Rows 11 and 13. The lines have been corrected and should read:
Row 11 (rs): (K1, s2kpo, k2, yo, k1, yo, k3, yo, k1, yo, k2, s2kpo) 16x, k1, s2kpo, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, w&t, place locking st marker through newly wrapped st.
Row 13 (rs): (K1, s2kpo, k3, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k3, s2kpo) 16x, remove ring marker, w&t, place locking st marker through newly wrapped st.
I am sooooo sorry. I have sent out emails and ravelry messages with a coupon code to all knitters who previously bought the pattern for a free pattern of mine as a way of apology for the trouble this caused. I will review the rest of the pattern again, to make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN there are no other errors. Please download the new January pattern.
Thanks to all who alerted us.
