Malabar giant squirrel & guavas
Since I have a real liking for nature’s most peculiar, weird, mysterious or misunderstood underdogs I decided to design some of them for anyone who wants to get to know these natural weirdo’s a little better!
The magical Malabar giant squirrel is one of the worlds’ largest squirrels and can be found in the upper canopy of the tropical rainforests of India. This distinctive looking herbivore has a stunning prismatic pelt that, especially in full sunlight, displays a resplendent radiance! And, as the giant squirrel loves to munch on flavorsome fruits, the juicy guavas will definitely make for some scrumptious, tasty treats!
This pattern includes descriptions on how to make the Malabar giant squirrel and the (whole and half) guava fruits
The 16 cm squirrel has a 13 cm tail and was made on 2 mm dpn (UK 14, US 0), the 2.5 cm guavas were done in miniature on 1.25 mm dpn, all in single plies of Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine (150)
Not only the colors, but also the texture of your yarns determine the appearance of the giant squirrel, so adding a strand of mohair to your knit makes the squirrel appear really furry and fluffy. In this case strands of Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk were added to the base yarn. All items can be knitted on thicker needles, in heavier yarn, and will then turn out a little larger.
The Malabar giant squirrel & guavas make a small and easy, fast and fun project ideal for any scraps of yarn you have lying about. All parts are knitted flat and some intarsia color work and short rows are asked for.
Enjoy this kaleidoscopic knit!
