This Mallard duck and duckling pattern was inspired by a duckling found and rescued at the Athens Metro in the summer of 2021, as a result of wildfires and heat wave in the Attica region that caused many birds and animals to flee towards the city. It was also part of an e-book of 8 woodland creatures pattern, aimed to raise funds for Anima, a non-profit association active in the field of natural environment and rehabilitation of wild animals (https://www.wild-anima.gr/en/).

Tools & materials used;

• Yarn weight: DK, Light worsted (8 ply)
• 55m (60yards) in BEIGE & BROWN
• 40m (45yards) in BEIGE & BROWN
• 35m (40yards) YELLOW & GREEN
• A couple of m/yards in WHITE
• Polyester stuffing
• 9-12mm black safety eyes
• 3-4mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, stitch marker, scissors

This pattern is of intermediate difficulty. Basic skills required;

• Start your piece with a sloppy slip knot or a magic ring
• Single crochet (increase and decrease), double crochet
• Make colour changes
• Work on both sides of the foundation chain
• Sew crocheted pieces together
• Finish off your piece with tail
