Maltings is inspired by the converted Victorian malt barns at Snape Maltings, in Suffolk, UK. Located on the banks of the River Alde and surrounded by rolling green fields, the maltings stand out against the wide Suffolk skies.

As I designed this pullover, I thought about the distinctive shape of the industrial buildings and the contrast to their rural surroundings. The graphic yoke on this special pullover is inspired by the maltings’ reflection in the river.

Maltings is a top-down seamless adventure in colour. Pick two neutrals and a pop of colour for the motifs, or go for an all-out colour fest. Whatever palette you choose, with worsted weight yarn at an 18-st gauge, you’ll whip this cosy sweater up in a flash.

The pattern includes two options for the yoke colourwork: -

• “Spicy,” which is suitable for confident colourwork knitters; and
• “Mild,” which is suitable for those new to colourwork knitting.

If you’re OK with using 3 colours in a single round (this applies for 8 rounds) and you can handle floats that are more than 5 stitches long, then I highly recommend choosing the “spicy” pullover, which is the one shown in the pictures.

XS (S, SM, M, ML // L, XL, 2X // 3X, 4X, 5X), designed to fit with 12.5-18cm/5-7” positive ease at bust.

Shown in Meadowyarn Fell (worsted weight; 100% superwash Merino wool; 230m/252yd per 115g hank) in Grasp the Nettle (MC), Fashion Week (CC1) and On Cloud Nine (CC2). Sample used 330g/50g/115g of MC/CC1/CC2.

Construction
Maltings is worked seamlessly in the round from the top down. Short rows are worked to raise the back neck, and knitting continues with spaced increases on the yoke. The stranded colourwork yoke is worked from the chart (with a choice of two different designs). Sts are held for sleeves, and knitting continues down the body, with colourwork at the waist. Sleeves are then worked in the round from the top down.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited for a trouble-free knit.

Snape Maltings’ setting on the river is a magical haven for wildlife, especially birds. Its industrial buildings, which were formerly used to convert grain into malt for brewing beer, are now home to a vibrant arts and cultural centre, inspired by the legacy of local composer Benjamin Britten and his partner, singer Peter Pears.
