Mankell Mitts
Mankell Mitts are a collaboration between internet yarn shop, Fairlight Fibers, and designer K.2.The.Moon (Lisa Maslowe). Ullcentrum’s wonderful yarns, which contain 100% Swedish wool, are available in the U.S. from only a few select yarn shops. In order to promote usage of this lush, rustic yarn, we present this simple free pattern!
Mankell Mitts will be an easy project for anyone experienced in knitting fingerless mitts; but there are several uncommon design aspects which may provide an interesting addition to your winter accessories. As long as a knitter is prepared to make use of the many tutorials available online, this would make a perfect introduction for someone that has never tried making mitts.
As for construction, Mankell Mitts begin with a German Twisted Cast-on, to create a stretchy cuff that will fit over the hand. Several initial rounds of Waffle Stitch establish the cuff; extra repeats of this section may be added if a longer mitt is desired. Stockinette Stitch covers the palm area. This flatter texture suits the potential demands of the hand, creating less bulk, and an ease of flexibility. Thumb gusset increases begin above the base of the hand, and are later placed onto waste yarn. New stitches are then supplemented with a Backwards-loop Cast-on. Subsequent decreases allow the mitt to follow the form of the hand and taper slightly during the final rounds. An Icelandic Bind-off provides a suitably stretchy finish which also matches the cast-on edge!
If you agree that a strand of mohair adds a lovely touch to any project, go for it! The gauge should not be affected by an added strand of lace.
And if you were wondering, the name of this pattern was chosen as a tribute to the late Swedish author, Henning Mankell. For a truly Swedish experience, listen to his remarkable Wallander detective series on audiobook while you knit!
